Glenn Maxwell announces ODI retirement

Glenn Maxwell, an Australian all-rounder, has announced that he will no longer play ODI cricket in order to concentrate on Twenty20 internationals. Maxwell played in 149 oneday internationals from 2012 to 2025, scoring 3990 runs and taking 77 wickets. Additionally, he was a member of the Australian teams that won the World Cup in 2015 and 2023.

Maxwell was an explosive batter who scored runs at an average strike rate of 126.70 and an average of 33.81. His unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup is regarded as his best ODI performance and arguably his greatest. In addition, he scored 23 half-centuries and three additional centuries. He was also a good offspinner as a bowler, picking four fours four times in his career. In addition to being an excellent fielder, he has 91 catches in the format.

Cricket Australia made the announcement that Maxwell made the decision to focus on getting ready for the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India in 2026. Additionally, the board stated Maxwell’s intention to concentrate on international obligations and the Big Bash League.

Reflecting on his career and decision to retire, Maxwell said, “I think back to right at the start I was picked ahead of my time and out of the blue. I was just proud just to be playing a couple of games for Australia. I thought I was just going to have that.

“Since then, I have been able to go through the ups and downs of being dropped, being brought back, playing in a few World Cups, and being on some great teams,” I said.

This year, Maxwell made his last ODI appearance against India in the Champions Trophy. Maxwell is currently out of the IPL because of a leg injury.

“The way my body was responding to the conditions gave me the impression that I was somewhat disappointing the team. “I asked (Chair of Selectors) George Bailey what his thoughts were going forward after having a good conversation,” he told the Final Word Podcast.

“I told him, “I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own,” when we talked about the World Cup in 2027. They should hopefully get enough of a lead-in to keep that role.

“I always said that if I thought I was still good enough to play, I wouldn’t give up my position. I didn’t want to just hang in there for a few games and almost play for my own benefit.

“This gives them the best look at the lineup leading up to that next World Cup because they are moving in such a clear direction. I am aware of the significance of planning.”

“Glenn will be known as one of the one-day game’s most dynamic players, who had key roles in two ODI World Cup victories,” said George Bailey, Maxwell’s former captain and current chair of selectors. Bailey was expressing his congratulations to Maxwell on his career. It is remarkable how naturally gifted and skilled he is. His longevity, underappreciated ability with the ball, and energy on the field have all been outstanding. Another thing that stands out is his dedication and enthusiasm for playing for Australia.

“Fortunately, in the T20 format, he still has a lot to offer Australia. If everything goes according to plan, he will play a crucial role in the coming year as we prepare for the World Cup early next year.”
